what am i into this quarter - Q1 2026

i have such a vivid memory of seeing this live last year - Jess Kantorowitz leaning over the crowd and singing the prechorus like she was telling us a secret. probably my favorite concert i've ever been to. :) so glad this song (and the excellent album it's from) is out now!

hello, and welcome to the missive! not entirely sure what this is gonna be - part diary entry, part recommendation list, all random thoughts. sorry for using corporatespeak but it's snappier than "the past three months"... maybe i can make a name pun... kyu1. we'll workshop it.

task bingo

i love gamifying things so i am actually motivated to do them. here's mine from the last three months!

activities

  • rock climbing
  • volleyball
  • bullet journaling

reads

i am sure i have read more things that i enjoyed and simply forgot to save them. if i remember more i will come back and edit. watch this space.

entering the cozy sff uncanny valley by durandal (book review)

some interesting and salient points reflecting on the cozy sff publishing trend of the past decade ish! i don't necessarily agree with everything randal says here, but it was a good read. i've been thinking about it since i read it a month or so ago. (i've been thinking more about this review rather than the book it was reviewing, which maybe is an idictment of the book...)

supermutant magic academy by jillian tamaki (webcomic)

technically a re-read! tamaki's art is beautiful as always, even in this stripped-back format - her line weight and movement is impeccable and her character designs are so simple and charming. it feels very effortless, and yet works very well. i really like her sense of humor and the way the tone dips into irreverence and existentialism in a very Teen way.

project hail mary by andy weir (novel)

andy weir has such a way with writing very readable very entertaining very interesting books and this is no exception. i really loved how thought-out every element of the process and world is. it feels like weir has built contingencies for his contingencies. really funny, too, i laughed out loud several times. yes i saw the movie, the book is better.

games

minute cryptic

daily web game ✩ 1-5 min

i loooove crosswords, but i have never been able to quite wrap my head around cryptics - whenever i sit down to try and do one i end up staring at the page until i mayyybe get a couple clues, then give up. minute cryptic is a great bite-size way of approaching it - it has a great hint system that breaks down the indicators and fodders. so much of cryptic crosswords is knowing the lingo and the patterns. this is a great way to learn them!

blades in the dark

heist ttrpg ✩ 3-5 hour sessions

i've been running a west marches campaign and enjoying it immensely! this kind of drop-in-drop-out formula works very well for blades, in which each session is meant to be self-contained.

and i love playing blades so so much - the fast pace, the flashbacks, the clear negotiation of stakes. my blades thoughts could be their own blog post, and they probably will, eventually. just know that it's my favorite ttrpg of all time.

blue prince

puzzle roguelike ✩ 1 hr run, 30+ hr game

i'm only about 20 hrs in so far. i'm enjoying it a lot so far - every time i think we're close to the end, there's a new twisty puzzle to chase down. despite the slow pacing of each puzzle and the slow drip of story discoveries, i feel like every run i do i figure out something new or interesting. can't wait to play another 20 hours!

if you end up playing and feel stuck/bored, i highly recommend this site for subtle hints. :)

dead by daylight

1v4 tag with horror elements ✩ 15 min matches

ah, dbd... i love to hate it and hate to love it. strangely addicting - i got my friends into it in june of last year, and we have played a multiple times a week for the past ten months. best played with friends, not for the easily frustrated.

houndmaster and jake main 4ever <3

yapyap

friendslop quota game ✩ 30-60 min

much in the style of lethal company, you play wizards fucking up other wizard's towers in order to meet a "chaos quota".

the main draw of this game is the voice-activated spells, which are so so so fun. my friends are really enjoying casting spells at each other. it really leans into the sillines, which works for me.

slay the spire 2

deckbuilder roguelike ✩ 30-60 min runs

builds on the already great formula of slay the spire 1, with an added co-op mode! when i bought it, four separate friends immediately messaged me "omg you got slay the spire 2!" so i feel like that speaks to its popularity

media

The Unexplored Places: Tango Sector

scum & villainy actual play ✩ 1-2 hr episodes

fights for the top spot of my favorite actual play ever. christine is a damn good GM, and i love the rapport the whole cast has with each other. it's the perfect mix of silliness / seriousness and mechanics talk / storytelling.

i love love love the in-universe cold opens they do, and the false docs they have for each episode description. foundational for me in hs when i was listening as they came out, and still so dear to me now on relisten three years later.

Wake Up Dead Man

murder mystery movie ✩ 2.5 hrs

if there's one thing about me it's that i looooooove a whodunnit. josh o'connor is so great in this, just the total heart of the movie. has some takes on faith and community that really resonated with me (though i am a lifelong atheist, so take that with a grain of salt).

i also really liked corvidcorgi's take on justice in the benoit blanc series.

The Pitt

medical drama tv ✩ 1 hr episodes

in case the emmys and the golden globes aren't enough for you, here's my endorsement for the pitt.

it can get pretty gross sometimes (i have definitely looked away during some of the gorier parts). despite being very technical about medical procedures i know nothing about, it's really really gripping. they do a good job of having a med student or a clueless family member there to have things explained to them.

really great characters, as well - everyone feels very distinct and interesting. they do a really good job of making characters i want to root for depite and because of their flaws.

No Other Choice

thriller movie ✩ 2 hrs

really don't know what to say about this other than it was really good. super tense, though - i felt truly sick to my stomach sitting in the theatre. there are some sequences that i still think about months later

it's funny, it's brutal, it's beautifully shot. some really really great cinematography. cross-dissolves especially!!

Fionna and Cake S2

animated adventure tv ✩ 20 min episodes

watched with my sibling! such a good time. adventure time has a lot of nostalgia points, for me, and i had a lot of fun watching this.

i love all of the characters. watching fionna make the worst possible decision every chance she gets is like watching a train wreck. (but i love her though! she's so charming!) i had a lot of fun yelling "leave him!! he's not good enough for you!!" at the screen.

standouts for me are fern and fennel and huntress. seeing bubbline be so In A Relationship is still such a giddy shock to me.

Heated Rivalry

hockey romance tv ✩ 45 min episodes

yeah yeah, me and every other gay person on the internet. i was really skeptical going into it, but i ended up enjoying it way more than i thought i would! eps 1-2 are solid, ep 3 is really really bad, and eps 4-6 are really really good. i think it's worth sticking around till the end.

it hasn't consumed me the way it has seemed to consume other people, but i thought it was pretty good tv.

wrapup

some hopes for next quarter:

  • keep reading books! i've just gotten back into the habit of reading for fun this year - would be great to stick with it
  • try some new things! rock climbing and volleyball were things i picked up on a whim because i was kind of losing my mind, but they're one of the highlights of my week now.
  • enjoy the spring weather! maybe hiking or biking more...
  • keep on the small web train! i forgot how fun this was after abandoning my site for a year (oops...)

aaaand that's all i can think of for now! i reserve the right to come back and add more things as i remember them. if you take any of these recommendations (or if you have one for me), send a message my way :) big things planned for this site, trust and believe. thanks for reading!
